Aurora Textile Company Summary: In early 2003, Michael, CFO of Aurora Textile Company, is deciding whether or not to install a new machine called Zinser 351 in order to save the declined sales and increase its competitive force. In deciding whether or not to invest Zinser 351, it is important to get the NPV and the payback period. To get the NPV and the payback period, we firstly need to forecast the future cash flows that the new machine will generate. We found the ten-year NPV to be $3,171,551 based on the FCFs that we forecast. Also, we use the payback period to analyze the acceptance of this project. To predict the next ten years of EBIT, we needed the proper sales figures, which we calculated by multiplying volume by sales price. According to our spreadsheet, the sales price is $1. 1259 and we assume volume to decrease at a rate of 95 percent of the expected volume without Zinser per year—(95% of 120,000). After calculating the operating cash flow for the next ten years, we needed to find estimated FCF (Free Cash Flow). We found FCF by subtracting capital expense and change in NWC from OCF. Then, we used these FCFs to calculate the ten-year NPV. Our calculations yielded a NPV of $3,171,551 as we use the hurdle rate of 10%. In conclusion, the NPV for the long-term forecasts is positive so we should accept to install the Zinser 351. Moreover, after predicting the next ten-year discounted free cash flows, we were able to calculate the discounted payback period of 5. 69, comparing with the arbitrary cut off point 7. 87. For the arbitrary cut off point, we use the average return on equity (net income/total equity) of the past 4 years, which is -12. 702%, because it is more accurate and consistent than using the ROE of 2002. Then, we assume that all the equity leaves the company at 12. 702%per year. Hence, the company can maintain operations for 7. 87 years (1/12. 702% = 7. 87). Ultimately, if the Zinser 351’s payback period is more than 7. 87 years, the company will go bankrupt. According to the spreadsheet, we are able to report that our payback period, 5. 69, is less than 7. 87 and that we should accept to install Zinser 351. On the other hand, there are some issues of concern that we need to address if we use Zinser 351. First of all, the sale price will jump from $5 to $10 by using Zinser 351. Those who support the practice of active euthanasia might argue that helping the terminally ill to bring about their own deaths, allowing them to determine the how and when, is not only humane, but also allows the person, who is simply "living to die," to maintain dignity by orchestrating their own end, thus letting them die at peace, rather than suffer to the end, preceiving themselves to be a burden and/or disgrace, to those they love. According to recent polls, many Canadians would agree,3 but the question is, have they taken a close look at the ethical debate? Those who are against active euthanasia would say not, and would argue that by participating in the practice of active euthanasia, one is "playing God," or perhaps, even worse, that they are not acting out of mercy, but rather out of selfishness, attempting to lessen their own burden, and that therefore, the act is nothing less than cold-blooded murder. Murder is defined as; "The unlawful, premeditated killing of one human being by another."4 Euthanasia, in Canada, remains unlawful as of today, and the act of euthanasia is premeditated, thus whether for the purpose of mercy or not, euthanasia is, by definition, murder. If we ourselves are not in the position of the individual whose life and/or death is being decided, we cannot possibly know or understand what their will is, what they would opt for personally, or even whether or not they can comprehend what is happening, thus the decisions we are making find us "playing God," and assuming that our decisions are always in the best intrests of another. Without knowing for sure what the individual would have chosen, we may well have gone against their will, and thus have committed murder. Some would argue that the practice of euthanasia is used as a last resort, when the individual can no longer manage the pain of their illness. However, that arguement can be rebutted by an observation made by a proponent of a movement similar to Right to Die. Dr Pieter Admiraal, a leader of a movement to legalize assisted suicide in the Netherlands, stated pubicly that pain is never justification for euthanasia considering the advanced medical techniques currently available to manage pain in almost every circumstance.5 Thus the pain does not justify death, but rather it justifies the need for more money to educate health care professionals on better pain management techniques. When I read Romeo and Juliet, Romeo was in love with a girl named Rosaline in the beginning and was moping around because his supposed one true love in the world didn?t love him back. Then a few scenes later he was entranced by Juliet at the Capulet party. His change of heart happened so quickly you can tell that he probably isn?t really in love with her.
